What I Learned From Planning My Wardrobe Around A Color Scheme

Getting older can be a bitch sometimes, can’t it?

I’m not sure what got into me a few weeks ago, but I had the urge to purge my closet. Something about wearing the same colors since I was 13 or 14 just didn’t appeal to me anymore.

I’m growing up. I’m embracing my femininity. For me, that means I’ve finally begun to embrace a little color in my wardrobe!

For the longest time, I stuck with black, red, and white clothes. That honestly was it. Into my twenties, I held onto those colors that kept me comfortable, and just tried to wear them in blouses, sweaters, and nice pants instead of band tees and ripped jeans… which aren’t acceptable in the workplace, apparently.

Don’t get me wrong. I cannot and will not get rid of my favorite band tees and jeans – but, I’ve learned to be more intentional with my wardrobe since I realized that I was buying way too many pieces that I just wasn’t into only because they were “work appropriate.” They only served one purpose – “work” – and I wanted my wardrobe to be more functional than that. I wanted to grab just about anything in my closet and be able to make it work for any occasion. I spent too much energy and money on trying to love those particular “one use” pieces when I just didn’t.

It hit me a few weeks ago that I’m embracing color, and I like using it to express my individual style! There won’t ever be a day that I won’t have some black in my outfit – but I’m throwing in greens and oranges to brighten things up. I’m also loving the black, orange, and green combo because those colors suit who I am now.

I love earth tones now – nature rules! They never look dirty! My love for black stays too. I don’t need to wear only black, red, and white to prove I’m a rocker or music lover. My band tees can speak that for me. Those thoughts hit me like a tidal wave.

I may never be a pink girl, but I’m so happy that I’ve allowed myself to embrace color and to evolve in my style taste.

I’m now only buying pieces that really stick out to me. I’m only buying the pieces that I see working for multiple occasions. I’m only buying them in colors that I know I’ll be happy with. It’s such a relief!

Have you had the urge to purge lately too?
